Artist spotlight: Paper Lantern, 114 tracks of lo-fi, jazz and synthwave from Germany

Paper Lantern is the second-largest artist on Nova. Nine albums, from the 32-track Lazy Lo-fi Chill to the synthwave of Dreamshift, and where each one fits.

After Nova Sounds, the artist with the most music on Nova is Paper Lantern, a German project with 114 tracks across nine albums. The name suits the music: light, warm, a little glowing, and made to be left on. Paper Lantern's records fall into three families, lo-fi, jazz-tinted lounge and synthwave, and this spotlight takes them one at a time.

The lo-fi family

The record most listeners meet first is Lazy Lo-fi Chill, from 2025. At 32 tracks it is the longest album on Nova, guitar-led lo-fi with soft drums and a steady, unhurried pulse, and it can carry a whole working day on its own, which is why it anchors our article on lo-fi music for focus and study. Fireside Loop, thirteen tracks, is its warmer sibling, with electric guitar and a slightly more melodic turn; the title is accurate. Insert Coin, Stay Cool, from 2026, is the playful one: eight bass-led tracks with an arcade tint.

The lounge family

Two 2025 albums carry saxophone and piano into the evening. Jazzy Nights, ten tracks, is the closest Paper Lantern comes to a jazz record, and restaurants use it for late service; it appears in our guide to jazz and bossa nova for restaurants. Instrumental Nights, nine tracks, is more ambient and sits well in a hotel lobby after dark. Lost Guitar and Where We Never Returned, both from 2025, are the quieter corners of this family, guitar and space.

The synthwave family

Dreamshift is the outlier and, for many, the favourite: eleven tracks of synthwave, neon horizons and a sunset grid, a different artist in everything but name. It belongs on the synth page beside Synthia and Midnight Avenue, and it is the album to play on a night drive. Quietly On, from 2026, pulls the synths back into ambient and new age across thirteen tracks and closes the circle.

What ties it together

Across the three families, Paper Lantern keeps a few habits. Tempos stay moderate; nothing rushes. Melodies are short and repeated rather than developed, which is what makes the music easy to live with. And the mix is warm, with the high end softened, so even the synthwave sits comfortably at low volume. These are the qualities of good background music, and Paper Lantern is, by a distance, the artist most often found in Nova Business venues after Nova Sounds.

Where to hear it

A listening order

  1. Lazy Lo-fi Chill, to meet the sound.
  2. Fireside Loop, for the warmer version.
  3. Jazzy Nights, in the evening.
  4. Dreamshift, when you want to be surprised.
  5. Quietly On, to end.

Like what stays with you as you go. By the end you will have a Paper Lantern list of your own, and the playlists guide shows how to turn likes into one.

Instruments and texture

Listen across the nine albums and a small set of sounds keeps returning. A nylon or lightly amplified guitar carries most of the lo-fi records, played in short loops with the attack softened. A saxophone, breathy rather than bright, appears whenever the music moves toward evening. Synths are reserved for Dreamshift and the quieter pads of Quietly On, and even there they are warm, with the top end rolled off. Drums are brushed or sampled and rarely louder than the melody. The result is music with very little contrast between its loudest and quietest moments, which is exactly what a room needs from a background and what a listener needs from a long working day.

Paper Lantern in a working day

A simple way to live with the catalogue is to assign the families to hours. Lazy Lo-fi Chill or Fireside Loop from the first coffee to lunch; Insert Coin, Stay Cool for the busy early afternoon, when its bounce helps; Jazzy Nights or Instrumental Nights as the light goes; Dreamshift on the way home; Quietly On last thing. That is five albums and most of a day without a repeat, and it is the reason Paper Lantern is so often the second artist a new listener follows after Nova Sounds. In the app, following the artist keeps new releases a tap away, and the artist page lists all nine albums in order.
