Playlists that tell a story: The B, Neon Stray and Reverie on Nova

Three artist playlists built as stories: The B’s Heatwave Confession and The Last Call, Neon Stray’s Colossus Protocol and Reverie’s Project Ember.

Most playlists are moods. A few are stories, built in a fixed order by the artist, with a beginning and an end. Nova has several of these, and three of the best come from two English bands and an Icelandic project: The B, Neon Stray and Reverie. This post is about those lists, what they are telling, and how to listen to a playlist as if it were an album.

The B: Heatwave Confession and The Last Call

The B, from England, make guitar music that moves between ambient, grunge and pop. Their two albums are both available as public playlists in running order, and they are meant to be heard that way. Heatwave Confession - The B, eighteen tracks from the 2025 album, is a summer record with a secret in it: the first half is bright, the second half admits something, and the last three songs are the quietest. The Last Call, ten tracks from the 2026 album, is darker, tagged scary, and sounds like the hour after a bar closes. Heard back to back they make one long night.

Neon Stray: Colossus Protocol

Neon Stray have one album on Nova and it is a concept record: Colossus Protocol, sixteen tracks of electronic music with voices and synths, tagged scary alongside electronic. The playlist keeps the running order, and the order is the story: an arrival, a system waking up, a long middle where the pulse never stops, and an ending that drops to almost nothing. It belongs on the synth page next to Paper Lantern's Dreamshift and the darker side of Core Frequency.

Reverie: Project Ember

Reverie, from Iceland, also have a single album, Project Ember, fifteen tracks of ambient, synth and new age with bass underneath. The playlist is the gentlest of the three stories and the one that works as background as well as foreground: a slow build from a single warm tone to something like a landscape and back. It pairs well with Aurelion's Beyond the Horizon and with the quieter Eldrvættir worlds.

Why artists make playlists of their own albums

On Nova, an album and a playlist are different objects. An album is the record as released; a playlist is a list anyone can follow, add to a queue, or use as the seed of a list of their own. When an artist publishes a playlist of an album, they are saying: hear it in this order, but take it with you. For listeners, the practical advantage is in the app, where starting a playlist fills Up Next with its running order and starting an album does the same; the difference is that a playlist can also be a chapter in a longer list you build yourself.

How to listen to a story playlist

  1. Do not shuffle. The order is the point.
  2. Listen to the first and last track before the middle, if you are short of time. A story playlist usually tells you what it is about in those two.
  3. Then play it through once, preferably in one sitting; Colossus Protocol and Project Ember are both under an hour.
  4. If it stays with you, add the whole list to a playlist of your own as a chapter, with another story before or after it. Heatwave Confession followed by The Last Call is the obvious pairing.

The playlists guide shows how to add a list to a list.

More stories on Nova

Once you start listening this way, the catalogue has more. Eldrvættir's ten world playlists are a single story told across albums, described in its own article. Thavernia's nine albums are chapters of an imagined world. Buradayım Hala - Aylin is a six-track record in list form. And Lodos - Nova - Deep Inside Yourself is Nova's own twelve-track sequence, built to be heard start to finish.

Why order changes meaning

A song heard after a quiet one sounds louder than it is; a bright song after a dark one sounds like relief. Artists who build lists in order are using that, and a shuffle undoes it in seconds. The Last Call is the clearest example: its final track is gentle, and on shuffle it becomes a gentle track among others, whereas in place it is an ending. The same is true of Colossus Protocol's drop to near-silence and of Project Ember's return to its opening tone. If you only remember one thing from this post, let it be the first item in the list above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an album and a playlist on Nova? An album is the record as released. A playlist is a list that can be followed, queued and added to other lists; some artists publish their albums as playlists so the running order travels with you.

Which Nova playlists are built as stories? Heatwave Confession and The Last Call by The B, Colossus Protocol by Neon Stray, Project Ember by Reverie, the Eldrvættir world lists and Lodos - Nova - Deep Inside Yourself.

Should I shuffle a story playlist? No. The order carries the meaning; play it through from the first track.

Can I add a whole playlist to my own playlist? Yes. Open the playlist in the app and add its tracks to a list of your own; they keep their order.
