World FM and Prime FM: two ways to let a DJ choose

Nova’s two all-genre stations compared: World FM with Turkish-speaking DJs and Prime FM with English hosts, what each plays and who they suit.

Three of Nova's five stations are built around a genre: rock, lo-fi, jazz. The other two are built around a host. World FM and Prime FM both play every kind of song in the catalogue, and both put a DJ between the tracks to introduce what is next and keep you company. The difference is the language and the manner. This post compares them and suggests who each one is for.

World FM

World FM's own description is the best summary: music all day, warm and talkative Turkish-speaking DJs, every kind of song, discovery and energy together, with a short break every so often to greet the next song with you. It is the station that sounds most like a local radio station in the old sense, a voice that knows the time of day and the mood of the listener, and it is the first choice for Turkish-speaking shops, kitchens and cars. Expect Nova Sounds alongside Aylin, Lalin Tan, Çatlak Motor and the rest of the Turkish side of the catalogue, but not only them; the station is called World for a reason.

Prime FM

Prime FM is the English-language counterpart: nonstop music with warm, chatty hosts, stories, discovery and energy all day, and a host who drops in between tracks to say what is coming. The playlist is the whole catalogue, from Louie Fontaine's jazz to Cruisers' rock to Palmwine Radio's Ghanaian R&B. It is the station for anyone who wants variety without a plan and a voice without a language barrier, and the best Nova station for finding artists you did not know were there.

When a host beats a playlist

A playlist is better when you know what you want: a quiet morning, a jazz evening, a workout. A hosted station is better in three situations. When the room is open for hours and nobody will tend the music, because a station neither ends nor loops. When the space wants a human presence, a corner shop, a taxi, a kitchen, where a voice between songs is part of the warmth. And when you want to be surprised, because a host introducing a song you would not have chosen is the oldest form of music discovery there is. Our article on how Nova radio stations work explains the synchronised playout behind both.

When a playlist beats a host

Quiet rooms. In a spa, a library corner or a very calm restaurant, a voice between songs will be noticed. For those, an album or a playlist such as Elegant Coffee is the better choice, and Lo-Fi FM, whose segments are sparse and soft, is the compromise.

In a venue

Both stations are popular in shops precisely because of the host: a store that wants to feel staffed and friendly even in a quiet hour gets that from the voice. The Nova Business subscription covers them like every Nova track, with the public performance licence included and no collecting-society fee for Nova music. If several speakers play at the venue, they stay in sync, so the host speaks from every corner at once rather than echoing across the floor.

Keeping the discoveries

Everything either station plays is in the catalogue, so a song a host introduces is one tap from your library. Like it on air, and later open the album; the radio guide walks through it. Over a few weeks of Prime FM in the background, most people end up with a playlist of artists they would never have searched for, which is the point.

A day with both

Many listeners keep both stations and switch by situation rather than by taste. World FM in the kitchen in the morning, where a Turkish voice and a surprise song suit the hour; Prime FM in the car or at a desk, where the English hosts and the wider mix keep a long stretch moving; and neither in the late evening, when Jazz FM or Lo-Fi FM suit the quiet better. Both stations play around the clock, so there is no programme to catch and no reason to plan. Tune in, and if the song is not for you, the host will be along in a minute with the next one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between World FM and Prime FM? Both play every genre from the Nova catalogue with hosts between songs. World FM's hosts speak Turkish; Prime FM's hosts speak English.

Which Nova station is best for a shop? World FM for a Turkish-speaking shop, Prime FM for an international one. Both suit rooms that want a friendly voice; quieter rooms suit a playlist.

Do the hosts talk a lot? No. Hosted segments are short, a minute or so between runs of songs, so the music stays the focus.

Can I find a song I heard on Prime FM? Yes. Every song on every Nova station is in the catalogue and can be liked and added to a playlist in the app.
